Plug-and-play hydraulic unit for machine tool

International competitive advantage for a tool manufacturer through a plug-and-play hydraulic unit that requires little space and offers optimised operating comfort.

Plug-and-play hydraulic unit for machine tool

During the call-for-tender process we were able to convince the customer with our all-in-one solution. A Swiss machinery manufacturing was looking for a low-cost, stationary hydraulic unit in order to be able to increase its share of the international market. On the basis of the specified main components, we converted the hydraulic unit into a compact, completely prewired solution equipped with a Harting connector. The customer just had to plug it in and was then able to get to work immediately.

The challenge

Alongside the tight budgetary requirements, the necessity of reusing the main components was also a challenge that was not to be underestimated. These had to be re-engineered to make them compatible with the ARGO-HYTOS valve types selected for the conversion.

The oil reservoir was to be particular tight and prestressed with a maximum pressure of 0.3 bar. Special skills were required to fulfil these requirements during the installation of the system.

The solution

As required by the customer, we retained the main components (gear flow meters) and converted the valve system. To do this, we selected products from the manufacturer ARGO-HYTOS out of our product portfolio. These valves allow improved performance and can be installed in a space-saving manner due to their compact design. In addition, we used supplementary hydraulic components from BIBUS HYDRAULIK AG’s product range.

To guarantee the tightness of the prestressed reservoir, we completely redesigned it to produce a solution tailored to the special requirements. All other installed and flanged components were also selected taking tightness into account in order to design the hydraulic system for long-term and stable operation.

All electronic components (switches, valves, level and temperature monitoring sensors) as well as the electric motors were completely prewired and equipped with Harting connectors. Hence, the stationary hydraulic unit just needed to be plugged in and was then ready for use.

In the old solution (from a competitor) the pressure gauges were distributed confusingly throughout the system. As value-added, we were able to locate these on the unit’s front panel to produce a clear solution to this problem. This simplified the operation of the unit.

Value-added

Retaining the main components meant that it was not necessary to design a new system. We optimised the space requirements through a new valve control solution that also resulted in improved performance.

We also improved the system’s operating comfort. In the previous solution the pressure gauges were distributed confusingly throughout the system. In the new version we arranged them uniformly and clearly in one plane. This significantly simplified the use of the system and reduced the number of operating errors.

In summary, we were able to convince the customer through a mixture of engineering, craftsmanship and process knowledge. These advantages should be emphasised.
